We make full use of the functionality offered by the different web browsers, utilising sophisticated CSS effects and supplementing with our own custom javascript code, and some excellent open-source javascript and CSS toolkits including:
- Font Squirrel — beautiful fonts free for commercial use
- Google Maps — great for adding custom maps to websites, with driving directions
- jQuery — a javascript library that simplifies writing dynamic websites
- Simile Timeline — a timeline widget for viewing temporal data
- TinyMCE — a rich-text editor that makes online website administration easier
We utilise javascript and CSS to bring sophisticated effects to your website without requiring the Flash plugin. Whilst we admire some of the very impressive work done in Flash, it has its drawbacks:
- it doesn’t let search engines index the content within the Flash movie
- it causes problems for screen readers (used by people with impaired vision or disabilities)
- it doesn’t work on the Apple iPhone or iPad
- it isn’t available in some countries (due to U.S. export sanctions)
We thus recommend to our clients that they avoid Flash for all but the simplest things, and help them implement their dynamic content using the excellent capabilities of javascript and CSS.
